Dear Logan,
We finally moved into our new home. It's been a long day, and there will be longer days to come with the unpacking and organizing.
I just finished watching my recorded Grey's Anatomy. This episode is all about patients in Pediatrics. Whenever it's about kids in a medical show, I always cry. This time it's no difference. Mommy misses you so much.
You should be sharing a room with your brother. We bought this place because of you. But you're not here to share the joy with us. You won't be crawling on the floor like Makoto today.
I miss you.
Love,
Mommy
These posts are letters written to Logan, telling him how much we miss and love him, and what's going on in our lives. Logan was diagnosed with Leigh's Disease, an incurable Mitochondrial Disease. He left us on April 15, 2009, one day shy of turning 5 months old. We love and miss him so much.

Been a busy few weeks
Dear Logan,
I am so sorry Mommy hasn't been writing to you as often these days. The last couple weeks have been pretty busy. First of, we got the new house!! We signed all the papers, got the key, and actually started moving things in. Daddy has been diligently bringing stuff to the new house everyday. Mommy has actually been slacking off, and not really packing as much as Daddy. Unfortunately, I also got the cold or maybe flu, last week. Still not feeling 100%, but slowly recovering. I think I might get your brother sick too, but luckily, he seems to recover from the cold a lot faster that I do.
Last weekend was a busy weekend. We spent most of Saturday down at the new house. Remember I told you that when we came by? Your brother was so tired that day from the excitement of being in the new home, and being fascinated with the washer and dryer. He has actually never seen me do laundry, so he's excited to hear the beeping sounds, and see the lights and spinning. And because of all the new things, he was too excited to nap. Afterall, he's on Albuterol, which got him hyper. That's why by the time we came to see you, he was too exhausted and wasn't in the mood to sing and dance for you. After we move, we would be SO much closer to you. I am happy about that, and I could swing by to see you on my way to work, if time permits. When daylight savings is over, your place will only open from 8-5 p.m.
Last Sunday, we went up to San Francisco Yerba Buena Gardens area for the Target Family Day event. We got free admission to the Zeum, but stayed there for less than an hour. They gave out hourly ticket, and we didn't want to wait in line to get another ticket to go in. At least he got to do Karaoke up at the top floor of the Zeum. Too bad I forgot to bring my camera! Your brother did have a lot of fun at the huge slide at the play area, and surprised Mommy by sliding down the tallest one without chickening out. Your brother usually wasn't that brave. But after sliding down once with Daddy, he's fearless!
We plan to do another yard sale this Saturday and try to get rid of our stuff. We have so much stuff that we don't need or want anymore. Just as I told you before, the stuff we couldn't sell, we'll just donate them. Mmm.... I wonder if I should bring my unwanted items back to The Arc, or just bring it to Goodwill. Need to check with work.
On Sunday, we're having a pumpkin carving party at Uncle Greg and Auntie Karen's house. I already got you a small pumpkin, and will bring that to you on Halloween day. Maybe I can try to do something special to it, so it's not just a plain, simple, mini pumpkin.
The next few weeks will be busy packing and unpacking. We're all very excited. Even your brother kept on saying "We won't be at 820 anymore. We'll be at 215" our old and new home street numbers). The look on his face when he went up to the second floor was priceless. He had his eyes, mouth and arms wide open. It was hilarious!
Mommy will keep you updated on our activities and the move.
Take care, honey.
Love you,
Mommy

Asthma again
Hi Honey,
Yesterday I noticed that your brother was coughing intermittently after he got home from school. I was a little concern that he might have caught a cold. I also saw his classmates almost all have a runny nose, too.
So of course, I gave him his routine asthma treatment: nasal spray and 3 puffs of Albuterol. He was fine until around 3:15 a.m. He started coughing on and off, for about an hour. I knew it's his asthma again. I gave him everything I could do to soothe his cough: 3 puffs of Albuterol, water, Chinese herbal cough syrup, and even open the kitchen door to the backyard for some cool (and very rainy) air. Nothing really worked, and of course, none of us slept well last night.
Coincidentally, today was the scheduled follow-up telephone appointment with the pediatrician. What great timing. I told him what happened last night, and told him that your brother was doing a lot better since 2 weeks ago, up until last night. Pediatrician prescribed another inhaler for your brother, Flovent (which is a steroid). He said to use that twice a day for two weeks. Pump up the Albuterol to every 4 hrs again for 1-2 days, continue with Claritin and nasal spray. He said he's fairly sure your brother has asthma. It seems like his asthma is not hyperactivity-induced, as he doesn't really cough too much when he was running around. It might be inflammatory-induced. It's very likely that Aidan did catch a cold, and that triggered the asthma again. Pediatrician said the Flovent, though is steroid, is actually a lower dosage even using it everyday during the flu season than the rigorous 5-day treatment needed in case his asthma gets worse. He also referred us to see an asthma specialist, to give us more information. I hate to see that your brother dependent on all these inhalers for the rest of his life. Pediatrician said that it could be a lot worse than asthma. I knew he was right, coz I immediately thought of you. What your brother has to go through is nothing compared to what you have gone through. I just have to continue keeping an eye on him, and be pro-active with his asthma treatment.
Let's hope your brother's asthma will get better, and he will outgrow that when he gets older.
On a happier note, we signed all the papers for the new house, paid the down payment, and will VERY soon become homeowners! We're expecting to get the keys by the end of the week. Then we can take your brother down to the new house, on our way down to visit you.
I hope your home is not flooded. We've been having a big rainstorm and it's not pretty. Luckily, we chose your home to be slightly uphill, and hopefully you won't get too wet.
Miss you,
Mommy

Family Weekend
Hello Sweetheart,
What a beautiful and warm weekend we have! Luckily, we stopped by earlier this morning to see you before it got too hot. Sorry we didn't stay long enough. As I've told you, your brother's attention span only lasts so long when we're there. He is not patient enough to hang out for longer, and he gets distracted by pinwheels and other stuff. Hey, but at least he sang you "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". I have been encouraging him to sing new songs that he learned at school, but he usually gravitates towards "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". That's still his favorite song.
After visiting you, we went down to BJ's Brewery in Cupertino for Uncle John and Auntie Katie's engagement brunch. Yes, they're getting married! Do you remember they came by to visit you when you're at the hospital? Now Auntie Katie will officially join the Lee family soon. Daddy will be flying to Taiwan during Thanksgiving week for their wedding. Mommy and big brother will stay back here.
Another big news was Tai Po (Daddy's grandmother) and Yee Po (Daddy's aunt) from Taiwan came last Thursday. We went over to Grandma's house to meet them yesterday. Unfortunately, Grandma was called into work, so she could not join us when we took them down to our new house. Yeh Yeh (Grandpa) was fortunately able to join everyone. We all had dim sum, including Uncle John and Auntie Katie, in Cupertino. Daddy then went with Yeh Yeh to meet with the Loan Officer to finalize the details of the loan and the closing costs. Hopefully, we could move into our new townhome next month. It's exciting! Well, maybe not for the packing and unpacking part.
Next going is going to be fun. We'll be flying to Dallas for your auntie's wedding. I'll tell you more about that when we come home.
Love you,
Mommy

We're home and we can't sleep!
Hi Logan,
Mommy and big brother arrived home safe and sound. Aside from a couple poopy incidents that your big brother had (he always picked the right time to give Mommy headaches), the flight was uneventful, in a good way. This is mainly due to the nice technology we have these days, a touch-screen tv monitor at every seat! You know how much your big brother LOVES technology. That kept him happy for both flights watching and re-watching Spongebob Squarepants. Normally, I don't let him watch that show because I think he's still a little young for their 'violence'. But this time, I had no choice and luckily, this particular episode wasn't too bad. He actually slept nicely for 4.5 hours on the plane. Last time, I had him sleep like anyone, that is, sitting up straight. This time, I had him sleep like a kid should, to have him lie down and put his legs on me. He was semi-flat and semi-comfortable.
And you know what, of the 13 years I have left home and traveled back and forth Macau, I have never EVER once declared I had any food items. I don't know what got to me, but I actually told them I had some almond cookies in my luggage. I guess it was due to the fact that I was guilty in bringing stuff I shouldn't, and I was carrying food items with me (a dozen of egg tarts). So, I let them check my luggage and found my almond cookies (passed) but they also found my "chicken cakes" with meat in there (first time ever bought them), and my egg rolls with pork floss. Doh! Meat products, confiscated!! grr.... Luckily, I told them the food was only in one luggage and they didn't open the other ones. I really didn't know what got into me to be so honest!
We came home exhausted but were very happy to see Daddy. Mommy's cell phone battery died so I had to call Daddy after we came out. Luckily, Daddy was on his way and we live close to the airport. So, we didn't have to wait for long. I could see that your brother was getting really tired while waiting for dinner. I didn't want him to fall asleep while eating, so we gave him a bubble bath before dinner. Mommy and big brother both went to bed at 8 p.m. and he dozed off right away. We should have stayed awake for a little longer because we woke up at 1:30 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep. It's 5 a.m. now and Mommy is online, while your big brother is standing next to me playing with my camera.
Hopefully, we both are able to stay awake for a little longer and maybe we can get your brother to come home to take a short afternoon nap, and reinstate his nap schedule.
We'll come see you later this morning. I'll see you real soon!
Love you,
Mommy

He's home!
After a 5-night stay at the hospital, Logan is finally home! He was doing a lot better last night, just needed some bulb syringe suctioning, with no desaturation at all. He's sleeping quietly beside me at the moment. We're still very careful about his suctioning. Grandma borrowed a deep suctioning system from her hospital so that we could use it, at least until all the mucous is gone. I can still hear something in his nose or throat. Really gotta suction it all out before he eats later. I am so worried about him that I can't even go to the bathroom! I periodically look at his face to make sure he is still nice and pink, and occasionally make sure he is still breathing. Just doing that is going to make me crazy.
Before his hospitalization, we turned off the lights so that he can distinguish day from night. I guess we have to turn on the light at night again. I fear I can't see his face change if it's so dark. Usually, when he coughs in the middle of the night, I will wake up and prop him up a little. I am not sure if I will be able to get much sleep tonight at all. I hope a few good suctioning would be enough to make him feel comfortable.

"I'm HOOOOOOME!!", says Logan

It's been so busy since Logan came home that I didn't have the time to blog about his homecoming. The whole experience went smoothly. We got to the hospital by 9 a.m., beating rush hour traffic, to get Logan discharged. Got all the forms filled out, instructions and appointments ready. He looked so cute out of his hospital onesie when he was sitting patiently waiting to go home in the car seat. The minor annoyance was to carry the forever-alarming apnea monitor and the portable oxygen with us.
Our main concern when he came home was Aidan because we didn't know how he would react. The night before, I wrapped his big brother present ( a roaring and walking dinosaur) from Logan, hoping he would get a good first impression of his little brother. When Aidan came home from daycare, he came into Logan's room (formerly his) and gently pat him on the legs. That was so cute. We didn't even asked him to do that. He reacted very positively to Logan, probably thinking he's rather cute, for now. We told him to kiss Logan, which he did, sort of. He enjoyed hanging out in the room being in Logan's presence, while us adults trying to avoid him from touching this button and that button from the equipment and the space heater. He didn't feel possessive of his rocker chair as Logan is the primary user of it now. I constantly praise him for being gentle to Logan, for sharing and being such a good big brother and mommy's good helper. Let's hope this relationship will continue after this great start.
As mentioned earlier about the annoying, forever-alarming apnea monitor during the trial night at the hospital, things haven't gone better. It still kept on beeping and we just turned it off. We had the respiratory therapist from Apria to come take a look at it and change the settings, but of course right after she left, the alarm continued. We just turned that darn machine off and watch Logan around-the-look with one adult each time taking turns. The machine was changed to another one as I called Apria again to complain. The same therapist came out, but it didn't really change much. There are still many false alarms, just a little less than the previous one. I am hoping we don't need this machine soon.
The other issue with Logan is his nipple confusion (I guess). He's been using the hospital disposable nipple for a whole month and I really need to get him used to another brand. As much as I wanted to continue using the ones we have gotten from the hospital, this is not a long-term solution as they are supposed to be disposable ones. He took these latex ones very well but was not as successful with the silicone Avent ones. I went to Target to see if they have other brands with the latex nipples and only the Playtex drop-in bottles use them. Darn! Drop-ins are hard to wash and I really didn't want to use them. I bought a pack of cheap Gerber ones and hope he might like them. So far, no luck with Avent and we had to tube feed him half of the milk.
